BMOC, the operator of Beijing’s metro, has awarded
ALSTOM a contract for the supply of the Communication-based
Train Control system (CBTC) as well as the renovation of the
metro line 2 signalling system, within a consortium*. This
order is part of Beijing’s programme to modernize
transport and facilities for the Olympic Summer Games in
Beijing in 2008. The contract is worth over € 28
million.
The renovation of metro line 2 covers a 23 km line in
tunnel, a depot, and 48 trains (24 existing, 24 new trains).
ALSTOM and its joint venture partner CASCO will provide
ALSTOM’s URBALISTM solution, a radio-based train control
system including: a CBTC, a spread spectrum Wireless Local Area
Network (WLAN) for Train Control, interlocking, as well as the
Operating Control Centre. The URBALIS solution comprises a fall
back system with intermittent communication using the
Eurobalise beacon, to increase the flexibility and availability
of the overall system.
ALSTOM’s URBALIS solution includes an Automatic Train
Operation (ATO) system which will optimize the operation of the
metro trains on line 2. It will increase service efficiency and
traffic fluidity for the operator and provide heightened
comfort, safety and punctuality for the passengers.
The renovation, including the installation, testing and
commissioning, will take place without affecting the regular
operation of the exisiting metro line 2. The renovated metro
line will go into service mid-2008.
ALSTOM delivered an URBALISTM solution for Shanghai’s
metro lines 3 and 4 in 2005 and has a broad experience in
complex metro renovation projects, notably in Hong Kong,
Santiago de Chile, Buenos Aires and Sao Paulo.
As for radio technology, ALSTOM installed for instance
spread spectrum radios on Singapore’s driverless
Northeast metro Line and on Hong Kong’s East Rail Line in
2003. The use of a state-of-the-art spread spectrum Wireless
Local Area Network for Communication-based Train Control
provides optimum performance.
* The consortium includes the following companies: ALSTOM
Transport SA, CASCO, an ALSTOM Transport joint venture present
in both, Beijing and Shanghai, and EEB (Electrification
Engineering Bureau).

60 countries, ALSTOM's Transport sector offers complete
