ALSTOM has been awarded a contract by the Public Power Corporation, the
Greek electrical utility, for the supply of a turnkey wet flue gas
desulphurisation (WFGD) plant to its 300 MW Megalopolis power plant,
located in southern Greece.
The contract is valued at around 83 million euros.
The order covers the design, supply of equipment, erection, testing and commissioning of the WFGD plant for the lignite-fired Unit III at Megalopolis. The WFGD plant is scheduled to commence operation in the second half of 2008.
The WFGD air pollution control system will reduce sulphur dioxide emissions in line with the most stringent EU emission requirements, as specified in the Large Combustion Plant Directive (LCPD).
ALSTOMs WFGD technology removes the sulphur dioxide produced during the combustion of coal in power plants. The system uses ground limestone reagent to react with the sulphur dioxide in the flue gas to produce a gypsum byproduct that can then be commercialised or safely landfilled.
ALSTOM has accumulated over 44,000 MW of operating experience in WFGD systems over the past 40 years. The technology removes over 98% of sulphur dioxide from emissions.
Mr A. Mizan, Public Power Corporations General Manager, Power Generation, said: Already having successfully entrusted ALSTOM with the supply of the WFGD at our power plant in Florina in 2001, we were confident that this state-of-the-art WFGD plant in Megalopolis will contribute immensely to a cleaner environment in the area.
