The Rugby location reinforces Alstom Transport's links with
the town that entered the railway age very early on, being on
the main line between London and Birmingham as far back as
1838. The headquarters are located at an Alstom site that,
until recently, has been known almost exclusively for its power
generation activities. It is from here that Alstom Transport's
UK activities, involving two thousand people based at over 20
locations up and down the country, from Glasgow to London, are
managed.

Councillor Sewell shared with the audience his association with
the Rugby site. "I worked here for four happy years on the
development of traction engines during the 1960s. It is a great
pleasure to be here today and see the revitalisation taking
place" he said.

ALSTOM IN THE UK

Alstom Transport is a long-standing provider of new vehicles,
maintenance, signalling and parts to the UK rail industry.
Alstom designed and built Pendolino fleet for Virgin Trains on
the West Coast Main Line, provides full maintenance services to
Northern Rail in Manchester and to Arriva Trains Wales, built
much of the current fleet of metro cars running on the London
underground and today provides maintenance for the Jubilee and
Northern Line fleets. Through its Preston site, Alstom
Transport provides dual expertise as the company's UK supplier
of spare parts and logistics and global centre of excellence
for lifetime support of traction motors and systems.

Alstom recently formed a 50-50 joint venture company with
Balfour Beatty Rail Projects to deliver total signalling
solutions to the UK market. This company led an integrated
joint venture in the timely delivery of system infrastructure
for the final section of the High Speed 1 project, which sees
the Alstom-built Eurostar trains now arriving at the new St
Pancras terminal in London.
