Alstom and IED-Istituto Europeo di Design, have announced
the winner of the design contest “Destination 2018
– Urban Transport of the Future, between reality and
imagination: a tramway for Milan, Turin and Rome”: it is
“Open Tram”, the project developed by the students
of IED Rome’s school. With the exception of restrictions
inherent to the design of rolling stock, the students had carte
blanche to develop a tramway project meeting the
characteristics and needs the Italian cities are projected to
have in 2018. The jury has particularly appreciated the
research on and the use of transparency and light of the
“Open Tram” project. The winners will attend an
internship in Alstom Transport’s Design & Styling
department in Paris. As second was chosen the project called
“RIB”, by the IED Milan’s school and as third
the “Orfeo Tramway”, by the students of
Turin’s IED school. The three short-listed 1:10 scale
models and their project sketches will remain on display in
Torino Esposizioni exhibition hall until 28th December 2008.

Among the members of the jury, and one of the main supporter of
this initiative, Xavier Allard, SVP Design&Styling in
Alstom Transport, has commented: “The will of promoting
this contest underlines the attention that Alstom is giving to
design in the study and definition of its products. Students of
a school such as IED are creators and accelerators of new ideas
and at the same time privileged observation points into the
future. They are representative of the future expectations of
the end users and of our clients.” Principal of the
Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin, César Mendoza has
explained that “developing tramways capable of
identifying the cities and their needs was a privilege for IED
group, and working with institutions, public transport
operators and Alstom, has proved the efficiency of the method
adopted by the IED in nurturing the designers of
tomorrow.”

The awarding of the contest has taken place in Turin, at the
presence of Turin Town Councillor for the Transports, Maria
Grazia Sestero, together with the members of the jury Mr Ruben
Abbattista, Public Relation Manager for Turin 2008 World Design
Capital, Xavier Allard, VP Design&Styling of Alstom
Transport, Luisa Bocchietto, President of ADI (Association for
Industrial Design), César Mendoza, Principal of the
Istituto Europeo di Design in Turin, Gianfranco Guiati, member
of the board of ASSTRA (Transport Association) and Aldo Rotta,
Editor in chief of Plast Design Magazine.
