At the launching ceremony, Alstom Foundation announced its
objective to provide financial support totalling
1,000,000 over five years, during which Alstom
Foundation will closely work together with The Nature
Conservation to promote the use of alternative energy devices
for saving the forests, to promote eco-tourism for conversing
the local species in danger, to establish management team, to
raise environmental protection awareness of local community
through environmental education programs, to achieve the
biodiversity conservation and economic sustainable
development.

The Special Representative and Deputy Secretary General of
Yunnan Provincial Government Wu Mingde said, Yunnan
featuring the most outstanding nature of its richest
biodiversity. The biodiversity conservation in northwest Yunnan
is a crucial part of Yunnan governments ecological
civilization construction. Alstoms CSR actions plus
TNCs expertise on environmental protection will
definitely benefit the biodiversity conservation of northwest
Yunnan. The Biodiversity Conservation Project in Northwest
Yunnan will be the model of eco-economy and the sustainable
development.

Currently, in 312 villages, 24 townships and 6 counties of
northwest Yunnan, over 10,000 alternative energy devices have
been installed, among which are 5,279 biogas digesters, 3,079
solar panel, 139 biogas green houses and 2,034 efficient
stoves. The alternative energy improved the indoor air quality
of 4,000 families, benefited 9,000 families and reduced 50-70
present of the fuel wood consumption. In the nearly future,
more communities in the region are expected to join the
environment and biodiversity protection campaign. In an
initiative designed to encourage employees and individuals to
participate in environmental protection efforts, Alstom
promoted tips of 50 Dos and 50 Donts among
all Alstom employees for leading a greener life, illustrating
the role each individual can play in environmental protection.
Alstom will also initiate a Green Shopping Bag
Project supported by Alstom Foundation that over 40,000
reusable shopping bags will be distributed to 9,000
employees.

We care about Northwest Yunnan, in view of the
regions rich bio-diversities. A core value of Chinese
traditional philosophy is a balanced harmony between man and
nature, which is the groundwork for sustainable
development, said Claude Burckbuchler, Alstom China
President. To actively participate in the local
community environmental protection and the sustainable
development is the best combine of Alstom CSR and the harmony
between man and nature. We expect to further the cooperation
with the local communities and people in China through its
project, and to enhance Alstoms repaying for the
society.

Northwest Yunnan encompasses the "Three Parallel Rivers"
area, ranked first in importance out of the seventeen natural
heritage areas in China. The most compact river belt in the
world, three of Asias greatest rivers - the Yangtze
(Jinshajiang), the Mekong (Lancang) and Salween (Nujiang), run
parallel here for nearly 170 km. Although the region makes up
less than 0.4 percent of the total area of China, it has more
than 20 percent of China's advanced plants, 25 percent of its
animal species.

The Nature Conservancy has been invited by Yunnan
government for the biodiversity conservation for 10 years since
1998. The projects have extended from Yunnan to Beijing,
Guangxi, Sichuan, Shanghai, Inner Monongalia and Qinghai. TNC
provides the proven scientific methods, biodiversity
conservation strategy and message for government decisions. TNC
devotes to the sustainable development and scientific
conservation. Our projects are not only preserving the nature
but also protecting the natural and environmental source for
the sustainable development noted Zhang Shuang, TNC
China Program Director.
