On 5 December in Hanoi, Vietnam, Alstom Transport and
Vietnam Railways (VNR) signed a €38.3 million agreement
covering modernization of the signalling systems of 34 stations
on the 320-km line linking Hanoi and Vinh by Intercity trains.

This is a turnkey signalling project including Alstom’s
supply of electronic interlocking, trackside equipment (switch
motors, axles counters etc.) and a Centralized Traffic Centre.
Alstom Transport is in charge of the design, engineering,
manufacturing, installation of the equipment, testing and will
also handle training of local teams. The project is to be
completed in the second quarter of 2012.

This agreement is part of the Vietnamese railway system’s
larger modernization plan aimed in particular at the 1,700-km
line connecting Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City and known as the
“Reunification Line.” The Hanoi-Vinh project also
benefits of the bilateral cooperation programme between the
French and Vietnamese governments supported by the RPE
(Overseas Development Aid), an intergovernmental lending
agency.

“This project will significantly enhance the safety and
quality of railway operations on the Hanoi-Vinh line, in
accordance with the goals set by Vietnam Railways,” said
Michel Obadia, Managing Director of Alstom Transport Asia
Australia. “This agreement also strengthens our lasting
partnership with Vietnam Railways.” Alstom already
modernized three of the stations on the Hanoi-Vinh line during
the first phase of the project in 2005.
