The new trains for Norrtåg will serve the
new lines between Sundsvall-Umea and Umea-Lulea as well as the
existing Sundsvall-Östersund-Storlien and Lulea-Kiruna
lines. This order is part of the 10-year rail development plan
for the northern part of Sweden. The trains for Västtrafik
will operate between Kungsbacka-Gothenburg-Alingsås.

The new trains are Coradia Nordic EMUs
(Electric Multiple Unit) with 4 articulated cars and they can
reach up to 180 km/h. The trainsets will be designed and
assembled at Alstoms Salzgitter site in Germany while the
ONIX traction system will be constructed at the site in Tarbes,
France. They will be delivered by autumn 2010.

Coradia Nordic are particularly well-suited to
extreme winter conditions thanks to the placing of technical
equipment on the roof (traction, converters, air-conditioning
system etc). Able to accommodate 228 passengers, these trains
will offer a heightened level of comfort, in particular due to
enhanced accessibility made possible by lower floors and the
absence of steps. The trains that will be used by Norrtag will
also feature a bistro area. The Coradia Nordic are also a part of
Alstoms environmental protection strategy: they are 95%
recyclable and their distributed power optimizes the braking and
acceleration of each carriage, which decreases energy
consumption.

This order strengthens our position on
the Swedish rail market and underlines the success of this train,
which is appropriate for the Swedish climate, said Roland
Kientz, Alstom Transport Senior Vice President for Northern
Europe. his is in fact the fifth order for Coradia Nordic
that we have received. To date Alstom has already supplied
71 regional trains to Stockholms public transport operator
SL. Another 49 trains have been ordered by the operator
Skånetrafiken. The Östergötland and
Jönköping regions also respectively ordered five and
two Coradia Nordic this past spring. Alstom has sold a total of
149 Coradia Nordic to Swedish operators.

Since the first contract in 2002, Alstom has
sold a total of 289 Coradia Continental and Nordic in Europe to
private and public operators, including this new order.
