At present, ICE3 trains run on cross border rail lines
linking Frankfurt to Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris. They are
currently fitted with 9 different control systems. Initially,
ATLAS technology is to be installed alongside existing systems
which will then be completely phased out.
Alstom offers a simple and proven solution allowing ICE3
to circulate in four countries with a unique train control
system. With this new ETCS order, Alstom confirms its position
as leader in the field of train interoperability on the
European network, said Roland Kientz, North Europe
Senior Vice President for Alstom Transport.
The contract follows several deals won by Alstom in 2007 to
supply the ATLAS system for Siemens built locomotives, which
include 60 Eurosprinter T18 locomotives ordered by SNCB
(Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Belges) and 26
BR189 Deutsche Bahn operated locomotives.
With more than 500 trains in commercial service using the ATLAS
system and more than 6.9 million km covered, Alstom holds a 70
per cent market share of onboard ERTMS² signalling
equipment. Alstom is currently part of more than 20 ERTMS
projects in 10 European countries, including the Rome-Naples
line in Italy, the first very high speed line with a level 2
ERTMS system, and the Mattesten-Rothrist line in Switzerland
serving the largest fleet of ERTMS equipped trains.
