The Sierra Lácera 38 MW wind farm will be built in Yecla, in the region of Murcia, and will consist of 23 units of Alstoms Ecotècnia 80 (Eco 80)* wind turbine. Works will start in May and are due to finish in December of 2009.
Under the terms and conditions of the contract, worth approximately 40 million, Alstom Ecotècnia will deal with the supply, transport and installation of the wind turbines, as well as their maintenance during the first operating years. Elecdeys contractor EYRA will build all the wind farm infrastructure. The project has been financed by Caixa Catalunya and the Spanish Official Credit Institute through a syndicated credit.
This contract enables Alstom and Elecdey to further strengthen Spains wind industry, which has an ever more crucial role to play in meeting the countrys demand for energy, said Alfonso Faubel, Vice President for Alstom Wind.
With the installation of this wind farm, Alstom Ecotècnia widens its presence in the Spanish wind market, which ranks third after USA and Germany in terms of installed base. Alstom Ecotècnia has an important presence in Spain with five factories and more than 1500 MW installed, represented by more than 1400 wind turbines in 57 wind farms.
Low rainfall and the rising cost of oil and gas imports have led to a gradual increase in Spanish energy prices, prompting investment in new wind projects. Going forward, plans for the grid to absorb 29 GW of wind by 2016, up from the 17 GW capacity end 2008, are also expected to facilitate wind power development in the medium term.
Editors Note *The Eco 80 has an output of 1,670 kilowatts (kW) per unit and a rotor of 80 metres.
