Winning Alstom Welder Sparks Parliamentary Interest

Alstom welding apprentice, Danny Broadbent, attended a reception in the UK parliament buildings on 24 November, a fortnight before he goes into competition with Europe’s best welders at the European SkillWeld final in Portugal on 6 December.
The Kingsnorth-based welder, was invited to the House of Commons reception along with Jim McIlwrath, Welding Manager and Brian Hunter, Welding Supervisor by the local Members of Parliament, Gordon Marsden and John Hayes.
Danny is also in the last four of 172 UK welders competing to represent the UK in 2011 in London at the WorldSkills final. A final trial early in the New Year will decide if he becomes one of the two finalists selected for the competition.
Jim, Danny and Brian were joined at the reception by other candidates who have made the UK Squad selection to represent Great Britain in the WorldSkills competition.
