The first train of the new 12 Metropolis metros ordered in July 2009 by Brasílias metro public operator has been delivered on June 29. It has been manufactured at Alstoms facility in Lapa (Brazil) which employs 850 people.

This first train set will be tested in the coming months in Brasília before it will be put into operation in 2010s second semester. The 12 Metropolis trains are composed of 4 cars each. The stainless steel trains will feature an integral low floor offering easier access to passengers, in particular the disabled. They will also be equipped with lighted panels indicating the stations.
In addition to supplying the rolling stock, Alstom will outfit the new trains with a signaling system for automatic train operation (ATO). This system will also be installed in the fleet of 20 trainsets currently in use, as well as along the entire length of the line (47 km) and at the 29 stations.

Alstom is very proud of contributing for such an important project for Brasília, that is celebrating its 50 years and planning itself for the future. Thanks to the new trains and the signaling system, the federal capitals metro will be able to transport more than 300,000 passengers daily, declared Ramon Fondevila, Alstom Transport Managing Director in Brazil.

With around 2,5 million inhabitants, Brasília is known for its planned architecture and wide spaces. Its metro system transports today, in average, 160,000 people per day. The investment in the metro network is being done to answer the growing demand of passengers transport in the region.

One in four metros presently in operation in the world is an Alstom metro. In total, more than 3,000 Metropolis coaches have been sold across the world in cities such as Barcelona, Warsaw, Budapest, Istanbul, Singapore, Shangai, Nanjing, Buenos Aires, Santiago de Chile and Santo Domingo.
