Prime Minister welcomes added renewable capacity and increase in energy security.
Alstom, the world leader in the supply of hydropower equipment and services, and Sanko, the Turkish industrial holding, today inaugurated the 320 MW Yedigoze hydropower plant, located on Turkey's Seyhan River. Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdoan, carried out the official inauguration ceremony.
The new plant will generate sufficient power to provide electricity to around 640,000 homes, or a city with a population the size of Gaziantep, in the Eastern part of Turkey.
In 2008, Sanko awarded Alstom the contract for the turnkey supply and commissioning of Yedigozes two 160 MW Francis hydro turbines and two 175 MVA hydro generators, as well as all auxiliary equipment.
Hundreds of guests from across Turkey and Europe attended the ceremony hosted by Mr. Abdulkadir Konukolu, Sanko Chairman. After the official welcome and opening speeches, guests went on to tour the new plant, which provides Sanko with the latest in hydropower generaktion technology.
The facility is part of Sankos programme to build additional renewable energy capacity, in line with the governments push to improve Turkeys energy security by increasing the share of renewable energy. The government has called for the mobilization of local power generation to reduce Turkeys dependence on imported fuels, which currently account for 60% of the countrys power generation.
Hydro has grown by around 19% over the last 5 years in Turkey, which currently has more than 16 GW of installed hydropower capacity. Alstom is Turkeys leading hydropower equipment provider and boasts more than 50% of the countrys hydro generator market share.
Adil Tekin, Alstom Turkey Country President, said: "This project is yet another step in a long and productive partnership with Sanko as we continue in our mutual quest to deliver cheaper, cleaner power to Turkish consumers and businesses. Our market-leading hydropower technology will provide much-needed additional renewable capacity to meet strong demand in Turkey.
Alstom hydro references in Turkey include the 672 MW Birecik hydropower plant and the 1,800 MW Karakaya plant. Alstom has hydro projects under construction totalling 2,000 MW, including the 600 MW Deriner plant, the 417 MW Kavsakbendi-Kopru-Menge plant and the 228 MW Arkun power plant.
