Alstom awarded contract to supply and service equipment for new gas-fired power station at Carrington, Manchester

The company will also be responsible for the maintenance of the equipment. The contract has been signed in consortium with Duro Felguera which will be in charge of building the new power plant for Carrington Power Limited.

The total contract value is around £500 million, with Alstoms share being around £325 million.

This new power station complements our UK portfolio of projects that deliver lower carbon power generation, which also includes carbon capture, wind and marine energy - putting Alstom in a leadership position to secure green growth for the UK.

The 880MW power plant will be built under an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract. Duro Felguera will be responsible for construction and site management. Alstom will supply two GT26 gas turbines and other key components, including the steam turbine, heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) and turbogenerator. Additionally, the company has been awarded a 16-year service agreement to maintain the equipment it supplied once it enters commercial operation.

Scheduled for completion in 2016, the power station will be capable of providing enough power for around a million homes. The station will be located on the site of the old Carrington power station in Trafford, next to the Manchester Shipping Canal and the River Mersey. Up to 600 people will be employed at the peak of construction.

In the UK, Alstom has built, maintains and operates over half of the countrys power generation capacity. Carrington is the fifth gas power station contract that Alstom has won in as many years, securing the companys leadership position in UK power generation.

Recent gas-fired plants built by Alstom in the UK include the 1650MW Staythorpe plant in Nottinghamshire, the 2160MW Pembroke power plant in South Wales, the 900MW Langage power plant in Devon and the 1275MW Grain power plant in the Isle of Grain .
 
Each of these plants is based on Alstoms GT26 gas turbine, which offers high efficiency and operational flexibility required from gas-fired power plants today.

Alstom already employs 320 people at its Manchester Traincare Centre in Longsight working on West Coast Main Line trains, and a further 150 through its Manchester based rail supply chain.
