Alstom has successfully passed a major step in the decision process of  two major contracts in South Africa and Canada, having been selected as preferred bidder on 5 December.

The largest project for South Africa is for the supply of 3,600 vehicles (EMUs) over 10 years from 2015, as well as technical maintenance support and spares supply over an 18 year period.  For this multi-billion euro contract, Alstom is partnered in the Gibela rail consortium with ACTOM, a South African company that manufactures electro-mechanical equipment.  It is the first phase of a  20-year programme to upgrade South Africas ageing fleet and network and meet passengers growing demand in Africas largest economy.  The deal is expected to be finalised in June 2013.

For the second project, the City of Ottawa (Canada) has selected the Rideau Transit Group consortium* as their choice to build the citys light rail transit system, known as the Confederation Line. Alstom is the preferred bidder to supply a fleet of Citadis low floor trams which can carry up to 300 passengers.  The trams would be assembled in Ottawa with the project due to start in February 2013.

These announcements  which must now be transformed into firm contracts - come hot on the heels of Alstoms 440 million award for 70 regional trains in Italy.

* The consortium includes Montreal-based engineering firm SNC-Lavalin, as well as ACS Infrastructure, an international group based in Spain, EllisDon Corporation, EllisDon Inc., Dragados Canada Inc. and Veolia Transportation Services Inc.
