Alstom was recently awarded three contracts by MTR Corporation Limited (MTRCL), the operator of Hong Kongs metro network, to supply a fully-automatic signalling system for the South Island Line (East); track and overhead line infrastructure systems for the South Island Line (East), track and overhead line infrastructure systems for the Kwun Tong Line extension; and confirmation of the option for a signalling system for the Kwun Tong Line extension. The total value of these three contracts and option amounts to 71 million. [1]

For the South Island Line (East), Alstom will provide its Urbalis CBTC (Communication-Based Train Control) system, the contract including system design, supply, manufacture, installation, testing and commissioning. With Alstoms Urbalis, this will be the one key fully-automatic metro line in Hong Kong. The Urbalis CBTC system reduces intervals between trains and its fully redundant architecture allows for high availability for fully-automatic operations. The Urbalis product range is the worlds leading solution for advanced train control for metros, having been sold for 50 metro lines over the past decade.

For the Kwun Tong Line extension, which is an option under the existing signalling system contract for the West Island Line, Alstom will provide the signalling system comprising Automatic Train Control, interlocking and local Automatic Train Supervision for the line that is operated with drivers.

In parallel, and for both lines, Alstom will supply, install and commission the tracks as well as design, supply, install and commission the overhead line system. It is the first time that Alstom has supplied track and overhead line systems in Hong Kong.

We are proud to participate in providing a new fully-automatic metro line in Hong Kong, as well the extension of the current network, by contributing Alstoms state-of-the-art solutions in signalling and infrastructure systems. These new contracts reflect the customers continued confidence in Alstoms advanced technology and solutions, and demonstrate our long-term partnership with MTRCL, stated Dominique Pouliquen, President of Alstom Transport Asia Pacific and Country President of Alstom China.

Since the first metro project in Hong Kong in 1975, Alstom has supplied over 1,100 metro cars for its metro network and equipped six lines[2] with train control systems.

The South Island Line (East) is 7.1 kilometres long, with five stations connecting the Northern business district at Admiralty Station to the Southern residential area at South Horizons. It is set to enter commercial service in 2015.

The Kwun Tong Line extension is 2.6 kilometres long, with two stations. When it enters into revenue service in 2015, a one-way journey will take around five minutes, as opposed to 25 minutes by road during rush hours.
