On 25 June 2012, a pioneering project submitted by Alstom UK was successfully chosen as one the Alstom Foundations projects for 2012-13.

With the potential to change the way in which communities in developing countries generate electricity, funds will be used to manufacture Score Stoves in remote Nepalese villages and provide training for local residents on how to use them.

The biomass stoves will produce up to 50-100 watts of electricity, be smoke free and use less biomass than traditional cooking methods.

UK employees, together with NGO partners, Practical Action, and the University of Nottingham, are developing the technologies.

This technology is transformational and highly novel. It helps to solve a very serious problem by reducing the risk of death from cooking smoke, which kills more people than malaria each year. It also provides electricity in a safe and sustainable way. said Joe Jamieson, Group Head Aerodynamics at Alstom UK, and promoter of this project. The Alstom Foundation is helping to bring new innovations to market that will change the prospects of so many families in developing countries.

The Alstom Foundation provides financial support for projects that improve the living conditions of communities in environmentally friendly and sustainable ways worldwide. First launched in 2007, the scheme supports project ideas that have been submitted by Alstom employees, either working alongside local associations or NGOs, or funding completely original projects.
