Alstom in Stafford to design and build new substation for Scottish Power Energy Networks

Alstoms Grid business in Stafford has been awarded a £21m contract to design and build a new substation as part of Beauly-Denny project, in Scotland.

Alstom will supply 400 kV, 275 kV and 132 kV AIS switchgear to the substation, which is located 2 km north of Denny and 1.5 km north east of Dunipace.

Known as Denny North, this substation is an integral part of the new 400 kV transmission line between Beauly and Denny, where it will be connected to the existing transmission network. This 220 km-line is designed to reinforce the power network across a large part of Scotland.

Alstom engineers will also carry out associated work at a number of related substations, including Longannet, Bonnybridge and Windyhill. For the project, Alstom has partnered with Enterprise Utility Services, which will carry out civil works, and installation and commissioning of the substations primary and secondary equipment, such as circuit breakers, disconnectors, instrument transformers, protection, and the DC and LVAC systems. The project is due for commissioning in late 2015.

Alstom employs around 6,500 people across the UK, including 2,000 at its Grid business in Stafford, where it is the towns largest employer.
