Alstom T&D India, one of the leading players in electricity transmission and distribution since 2008, has been awarded two air-insulated substation projects by Transmission Corporation of Andhra Pradesh Limited (AP Transco) to strengthen the power supply in the southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The total value of the contracts is approximately 1300 MINR (18 million).

Andhra Pradesh is the third largest state in India, with a population of more than 84 million people[1]. To meet the growing demand for power, the state government added nearly 6 000 MW of installed capacity over the five years 2007-2012, and aims to add a further 17 000 MW by 2017[2]. Alstoms 400 kV air-insulated substations will help meet energy demand by transporting the power produced at Hinduja National Power Corporation Limiteds (HNPCL) 1 040 MW coal-based thermal power plant in Vishakhapatnam district across the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The scope of work for both these substations includes the design, engineering, supply, erection, testing and commissioning of 400/220/132 kV air-insulated substations. The first order worth INR 669 million (approximately 9 million) is to supply of the 400 kV air-insulated substation at Suryapet in Nalgonda district. The second order is worth INR 633 million (more than 8 million) and covers the supply of the Kamavarapukota 400 kV air-insulated substation in the West Godavari district. This substation has a transformation capacity of 2x315 MVA.

Rathin Basu, Managing Director, Alstom T&D India, said: Adding to our strong order backlog, this new contract reinforces our expertise in offering advanced and reliable air-insulated switchgear technology. The substations will form part of the region's ongoing efforts to keep pace with rapid economic development in Andhra Pradesh by increasing both the availability and reliability of the electrical network. This success also reinforces our partnership with AP Transco; Alstom T&D India is playing an important role in building the transmission network in the State of Andhra Pradesh.

Alstom is one of the world leaders in engineered air-insulated substations worldwide. In India, Alstom offers air-insulated switchgear technologies up to 1200 kV and, between 2011 and 2012, engineered and tested the  first ever 1200 kV Capacitor Voltage Transformer, Digital Instrument Transformer and Disconnector. The company has also been selected for around 70% of the countrys Extra High Voltage 765 kV air-insulated substation contracts.
