Alstoms UK sales more than £500m in first half of year

International engineering company Alstom has today (NOV 6) announced that sales in the first six months in the UK were £574m, with orders received worth £440m.

Recent orders to upgrade two of the UKs largest gas-fired power stations and to refresh the interiors of Virgins Pendolino fleet (work to be carried out in Manchester and Wolverhampton).

Terence Watson, Alstoms UK President, said: This is a solid performance by everyone at Alstom given the difficult economic conditions that were facing as an industry and as a country.

We continue to see challenges in some areas but we continue to help keep the countrys lights on through our Power and Grid divisions, and to get the country moving through our work with the nations rail network.

Alstom operates in a number of different areas in the UK - Grid (designing and connecting electricity networks), Renewable Power (such as wind and marine), Thermal Power (building and maintaining traditional power stations) and Transport (supplying and maintaining high speed or Tube trains, or trams and other railway infrastructure).

The company which employs around 6,500 people across the country and, currently, has around 300 vacancies at various key locations, such as 83 in Stafford, 42 in Ashby-de-la-Zouch, 34 in Rugby and 27 in Nottingham.

Recent announcements by Alstom in the UK include a major contract to upgrade turbines at two gas-fired power stations, a contract to design a  turbine for a Northern Irish biomass power station, a Memorandum of Understanding with ScottishPower for tidal turbines, a £140m rail signalling contract, and the delivery of the first of 22 new trams  to Nottingham.
