Thirteen Trafford Council staff have raised £500 sponsorship for two deserving local causes supported by the Mayors Charity by completing the Greater Manchester Fun Run in May and the Salford 10K Run in September this year.

The sponsorship has been provided by Alstom and DF, the companies responsible for construction of the new gas-fired Carrington Power Station. Building work began on the power station site recently and the 880MW plant is due to start generating electricity in 2015. The power station will be capable of supplying enough electricity for 1 million homes.

The chosen cause of the current Trafford Mayor, Councillor Dylan Butt, is to raise funds to buy lifesaving defibrillators that will be placed at specific public facilities across the borough. The efforts of the Salford 10K runners raised £250 for the cause.

Supported by Councillor Patricia Young, last years Trafford Mayor, the Christie Charity is raising funds for a new Young Oncology Unit which will treat children, teenagers and young adults with first class cancer treatment and care. Trafford Council staff raised a further £250 for the cause by completing the Greater Manchester Fun Run.

The Mayor of Trafford Councillor Dylan Butt said: Since starting my Mayoral year I have been overwhelmed by the support and fundraising which has taken place on behalf of my defibrillator project. This latest sponsorship will provide a further boost to both my efforts to increase the numbers of publicly accessible defibrillators across Trafford and also the Christie Charitys fundraising.

Alstom representative Rainer Lueoend said: While the new power station will bring additional economic investment to communities living in Carrington and Partington, were really pleased to be involved with the excellent local causes supported by the Mayors Charity in Trafford.
