Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, has visited the site of the new Carrington gas-fired- power station as a special guest of contractors Alstom and DF.

Ms Green met with key members of the construction team to find out more about measures being undertaken to minimise any impact of the construction on local community members, whilst maximising local employment and contract opportunities wherever possible.

Wolfgang Puschitz, Project Director for lead contractor Alstom said, We believe that its vital the local community understands whats going on during the different phases of construction and were happy to respond to any queries that local people may have.

Were going to be here for the next three years and beyond as Alstom has a 12-year service contract for the power station and we want to make sure we remain a good neighbour throughout that period.

Kate commented that she welcomed the opportunity to meet with the construction team and to discuss the opportunities for the local communities. Kate said We need to work closely with Alstom and DF to ensure that the benefits are felt locally, be it contracts, jobs or money into the local economy.

There is little to see on site at the moment, aside from a large suite of temporary offices. However, it was good to put the scheme into perspective.

Neighbouring MPs Paul Goggins, MP for Wythenshawe and East Sale, and Graham Brady, MP forAltrincham and Sale West, also met with the team.

Mr Goggins was particularly interested in the potential for local jobs and skills to be developed during the course of construction of the 880MW power station. Wolfgang Puschitz commented that they would be working closely with trade unions and local job centres to ensure locals were given employment opportunities, wherever possible.

Carrington Power is owned by ESB, the leading Irish Energy Company. John OConnor Project Manager of Carrington Power for ESB said We are really pleased with the progress on Carrington Power which is a key element in ESBs ambitions in the GB energy Market. Working with our consortium partners Alstom and DF, we are eager to see the many opportunities this project brings including to local people. We want to be a good neighbour we will be here for the next 30 years as the power station goes into operation.
