Alstom Transport is to invest around £1.3m in its facilities in the North West of England to improve logistics and distribution. The company will spend about £1m in building a new warehouse at its Longsight Traincare Centre in Manchester. This investment adds up to the £300,000 investment in Preston parts and modernisation facility bringing in Lean Lift® technology, an automatic system that picks up parts in the warehouse for a quicker delivery.
Work is expected to start on the warehousing at Longsight in April, with completion expected by the end of November this year. The new facility has been specially designed as a storage centre for the bogie workshop that was opened last month. The 300-strong team at the site is currently undertaking the fourth heavy engineering overhaul of the Virgin Pendolino fleet, which includes changing more than a million components. These Pendolino Trains run between the North West and London and Glasgow.
This is a major investment that will also bring a real change to the way that logistics and distribution are undertaken said Rob Whyte, Managing Director of Regional, Intercity and Services for Alstom Transport UK.
