Bogies & Drives: Safety, efficiency, reliability, and comfort for all trains

Bogies at a glance
As a crucial component at the heart of train dynamics, Alstom’s bogies and drives portfolio ensures safe and cost-effective operations, as well as comfortable travelling conditions. It offers the best technologies and solutions for all types of rolling stock vehicles.
Our wide portfolio of bogies and drives meets the needs of operators of all rail solutions, ranging from light rail up to very-high-speed rail and locomotives. Adapted to suit all environments and conditions of use, our bogies, including drive systems with different topologies, are built to cater to a range of track gauges and axle loads to function optimally at a variety of operating speeds and in extreme climates.
Alstom bogies and drives have a specific total cost-of-ownership focus: tram bogies, for instance, are the lightest on the market, reducing track wear and energy consumption and therefore the costs relating to operations and infrastructure maintenance. They are easy to maintain, in particular thanks to a wide range of spare parts and tailored maintenance and repair services. Alstom supports customers throughout the bogie life cycle, enabling them to concentrate on their core business. Furthermore, Alstom’s network of component manufacturing centres on all five continents ensures unparalleled proximity with clients.
Specifically designed to meet local railway standards wherever they are used in the world, Alstom’s bogies and drives offer the latest technological advances, combining operational efficiency with passenger comfort.
Examples include the Iponam bogie fitted to the 100-km/h Citadis Spirit light-rail vehicle in North America or the best-in-class lightweight Flexx Eco inboard bearing bogie used in metro, suburban, regional and high-speed trains. The technology enables best drive performances, optimised life-cycle cost and provides tilting capability to the Avelia high-speed platform. Alstom additionally offers innovative systems for height levelling, improved bend-friendliness and track monitoring up to the development of customer-optimised wheel profiles. The innovations are mainly driven by our two bogie engineering expertise centres located in France and Germany.
