  • Alstom greens the electricity consumption of its Mátranovák production site

  • The 1.5 megawatt solar park will provide more than 20 percent of the factory's electricity consumption from green energy

11 June 2025 – Alstom, global leader in smart and sustainable mobility, greens the electricity consumption of its Mátranovák plant with a 1.5-megawatt solar park. Committed to sustainable development, Alstom is making its operations more sustainable across the entire product chain, with a key element being the use of green energy to meet the energy needs of production and operations

“Alstom is committed to sustainable development and continues to invest in energy savings at its Mátranovák site. In the past, we have replaced lighting with energy-saving bulbs, insulated offices, and modified the heating system. As part of this approach, we will now produce greener electricity."

Gáspár Balázs
CEO of Alstom Hungary

The investment will replace 23 percent of the annual electricity consumptionof Alstom's Mátranovák plant with green electricity. Experts will install 6600 square meters of solar panels. These will provide 1600-1700 megawatt hours of green electricity annually for the factory, which will save the environment from 617 tons of CO2 emissions per year. The investment is implemented as an onsite PPA (Power Purchase Agreement) construction, within the framework of a 15-year partnership with E.ON.

Alstom is committed to sustainable development and continues to invest in energy savings at its Mátranovák site. In the past, we have replaced lighting with energy-saving bulbs, insulated offices, and modified the heating system. As part of this approach, we will now produce greener electricity.

In addition to making our operations more environmentally and climate-friendly, we will have access to predictably priced electricity for the production in the long term," said Gáspár Balázs, CEO of Alstom Hungary.

At the Mátranovák factory, the production of bogie frames for metro and railway assemblies began four decades ago. The quality of these frames is vital for railway safety, they support the axles, springs, and brakes of the trains. To ensure the highest reliability, the site in Mátranovák employs complex, high-level combined welding techniques. Today, the products manufactured in Mátranovák are distributed throughout Europe and are used in various types of trains, including traditional and high-speed trains, suburban trains, locomotives, and double-decker railcars.

Alstom is a key player in Hungarian rail transport, having been present in Hungary for more than 20 years. It is one of the largest metro train suppliers in the country, which manufactured 50 percent of Budapest's metro trains for metro lines 2 and 4, and the latter is the first driverless metro in Central and Eastern Europe. In addition, MÁV operates 25 Traxx locomotives in its own fleet, and several other leased Alstom electric locomotives are operating in Hungary. In addition, the company has successfully modernised MÁV-Start's 59 electric multiple units with the state-of-the-art ETCS L2 train control system, thanks to which these trains can run on Hungarian railway lines more safely and efficiently than before.
