Melbourne's tram of the future : top 10 designs
unveiled

Industrial design and engineering undergraduate students
from Monash, RMIT and Swinburne Universities submitted designs
for a futuristic new CITADIS tram, that may operate in
Melbourne in 2020. Projects had to be based on the existing
CITADIS tram operating on Route 109 a
line crossing Melbourne from south to east, as well as on the
city existing tram network and infrastructure. Students had to
take into account Melbournes future social needs as
outlined in the Melbourne 2030 plan, considering issues like
environmental sustainability and improved access for elderly
and disabled travellers.

The prize for the competition comprises a two months,
all-expenses paid internship at the ALSTOM Transport
Headquarters Design Studio in Paris, where the winners will
work with and be mentored by a platform project team and be
integrated within the product strategy organisation. University
departments of the winning student will receive design
equipment prizes. The ultimate winners of the competition will
be announced mid October.

According to Christophe Gourlay, competition judge and
Customer Director for ALSTOM Transport Australia & NZ, the
28 entries submitted were all extremely satisfactory in terms
of quality and standards, students having really captured the
spirit of Melbourne.
