The Administration of Switzerland's Vaud canton today
declared ALSTOM as preferred bidder for the supply of rolling
stock for the 'North-East' Lausanne metro project. This project
calls for the delivery of 19 two-car trainsets, of which 10 are
to be supplied in an initial phase.

The tender called for the bidders to quote rubber-tyred
metro cars. This specification resulted from preliminary
studies. The choice of tyre over steel wheels was made in
consideration of the line gradients (12 % at 60 km/h).

ALSTOM's proposal, incorporating a proven rubber-tyred
solution, addressed these specifications completely. Metros of
this type have operated in Paris - most recently on the new
Meteor line - and also in Santiago, Chile, where they have been
in operation for several decades. ALSTOM has built some 3200
rubber-tyred metros which are presently in revenue service
around the world.

ALSTOM is the world's leading supplier to the railway
industry. The Company has developed its expertise and
capabilities in sophisticated automatic and driverless mass
transit systems. ALSTOM's know-how in heavy mass transit
rolling stock and signalling is unmatched - with metros in
operation daily in more than 50 cities around the world.
