Major supplier for Sydney's Millennium Trains

On November 7, ALSTOM won a follow-on order for the supply of
equipment for 15 new Millennium trains being built by EDI Rail
for use in the greater Sydney area.

ALSTOM has blended the reliability of proven equipment with
innovative train-management software to deliver a superior
equipment and service package, in response to the rigorous
specifications of the New South Wales State Rail Authority.

ALSTOM is a major supplier for Sydneys Millennium
trains, supplying equipment and commissioning three major
subsystems (traction, auxiliary power and train management) for
the double-deck, four-car trains.

Each of the additional 15 trainsets will be equipped with
ALSTOMs highly reliable, compact and lightweight ONIX
traction inverter drives, innovative AGATE train-management
systems and CARA converters for auxiliary equipment.

The first of the Millennium trains entered commercial service
in July 2002, which launched a 15-year contract under which
ALSTOM is responsible for the maintenance of the trains.

The current order for 15 new trains brings the total value for
ALSTOM of the contract to date to approximately 69 million
euros.

The AGATE system provides a powerful high-tech tool to assist
the crew in train operations and maintenance. Information from
all other train-borne systems is provided in a consolidated
manner, allowing real-time views and control of all-important
status and performance information.

The ONIX traction system, which uses IGBT technology, provides
smooth power and electric braking using alternating-current
drives and motors. Rail transportation systems in more than 12
countries use ONIX.

CARA converters provide direct and alternating current to the
train to power auxiliary equipment such as lighting,
controls, air conditioning and air compressors with a
high level of availability.
