ALSTOM has won contracts this year to supply Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) boilers to a biomass-fueled power plant in New Hampshire and to an alumina plant in Brazil.  These awards exemplify ALSTOMs capability to supply unique technologies that set the industry standard for efficiency, low emissions, fuel flexibility, and installed cost.

The first contract is to supply a boiler island to Public Service New Hampshires (PSNH) Northern Wood Power Project. (See separate release). The project, located at PSNHs Schiller Generating Station in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, will fire wood waste from local sawmills.  The ALSTOM boiler will replace an existing coal-fired unit.

By using a fuel classified as renewable, this project will allow PSNH to produce green certificates for sale to power suppliers that are required to have renewable energy in their power portfolios. Furthermore, the project will benefit the local environment by reducing emissions compared to the current boiler. Commissioning of this 50 MW unit is scheduled for late 2006.

The second contract is to supply two boilers for the Alumina do Norte do Brasíl S.A. (Alunorte) Expansion 2 Project in the environmentally sensitive Amazon region of Brazil.   These two boilers will generate 250 tons/hour of low-pressure steam for an alumina refinery. Commissioning of the Alunorte units is also scheduled for late 2006.

The boilers for both of the above projects will use ALSTOMs unique modular CFB design that is specifically tailored to meet the needs of process steam consumers and smaller power generation applications. This design combines the hot solids recycling of an entrained fluidized bed with the high turbulence and heat transfer of a dense bed, resulting in longer residence time and more complete combustion.

A key feature of these boilers is the modularity of the components; a low-height profile and bottom-supported design provides significantly lower erection costs and is suitable for many existing industrial sites.

The extensive operational experience of this design has also demonstrated its ability to fire a wide range of readily available fuels, while producing one of the lowest emissions profiles currently attainable.

Since 1968, ALSTOM has been an industry leader in the development of high-performance, low-emission fluidized bed combustion technology. ALSTOM continues to set performance standards for the industry with a CFB for process steam customers and smaller power generation applications that is more advanced, more flexible, more efficient and more cost-effective than any other system currently available.
