Located in the intensively agricultural Karditsa prefecture,
the plant will offer an optimized operation of the existing
irrigation system in this area of the country and will
contribute to the reduction of Greeces emissions levels
produced by fossil energy sources.

The project was awarded by the Greek Power Utility PPC to
the consortium of ALSTOM Power S.A (Spain) and Poseidon S.A
(Greek contractor) on September 21, 2005 after an international
bid. ALSTOM Spain in external consortium with Poseidon SA was
the lowest bidder with the best-proven technology for this
project, the value of which, reached a total of 8MEuro.

ALSTOMs part includes the supply of hydro turbines,
turbines governors, generators and excitations, supervision of
erection and commissioning, while Poseidons scope
includes civil works, electromechanical erection and supply of
the balance of plant.

The Smokovo hydro power plant will have a total output of
11MW supported by two ALSTOM horizontal Francis turbines of
3,5MW and 7,5MW each. The plant will be ready in 26 months and
it is estimated to produce approx 30GWhr/year, out of which
11GWhr is processed during the summer-irrigation period and
19GWhr during the winter/spring period.

One of ALSTOMs principle strategies for Greece is to
be constantly present in all projects of PPC, regardless of
project size and value.

George Dimopoulos, local Global Power Sales, says that
we expect a good market for mini/small hydro in the next
years in Greece, and this project will contribute that the
developers recognize ALSTOM, as one of the most reliable
suppliers for small hydro plants.
