The Kelsey Hydroelectric Generating Station was built on the
upper arm of the Nelson River in northern Manitoba between 1957
and 1961 to supply electricity to the International Nickel
Company's (INCO) and the City of Thompson: it produces a total
of 224 MW with the seven existing units.

ALSTOM will increase the output rating of five generator
stators by 33% from 37.5 MVA to 50 MVA and improve the
reliability, efficiency and operating life of the windings and
poles.

The upgrading work will include supplying new stator windings
and new poles windings, with ALSTOMs Hydro unit in
Tracy, Canada, being in charge of manufacturing, installation
and commissioning of the project. The first unit is scheduled
for completion in April 2007.
