ALSTOM has just delivered the first 700 MW runner for the Three Gorges
Right Bank power house, one and a half months ahead of what the
customer, China Three Gorges Project Corporation (CTGPC) had expected.
The manufacturing of the first runner - the core component of a hydro turbine, including assembly, welding, heat treatment, machining and balancing, was accomplished in a record nine months.
This achievement was made possible thanks to ALSTOMs local unit in Tianjin which built a special temporary workshop six kilometres downstream from the main dam with the specific aim of shortening the delivery time.
This gigantic runner weighs an astonishing 460 tons, with a height of 4.9 meters and a diameter of 10.9 meters. The runner is part of the contract ALSTOM won in 2004 for the supply of four hydro turbine & generator units for the Three Gorges Right Bank power house. Delivery is scheduled for completion in August 2007.
ALSTOM, the sole foreign supplier chosen for the Right Bank, has also supplied eight out of the total fourteen hydro turbine generator units installed on the Left Bank. All fourteen units are now in operation.
