Alstom Transport partners the 1st Paris-Lyons-Marseilles
ecomobility rally between 25 and 28 October

The aim is to draw the attention of the public at large, the
authorities and the transport sector to new means of transport
that are more environment.ally friendly.

From Paris to Marseille, taking in Lyon, 900km of intermodal
challenge (low-consumption cars and planes, trains, bicycles or
on foot) to demonstrate that mobility and sustainable
development are compatible.

60 competitors divided into 12 teams, made up of students on
scientific courses and working female engineers, including
Alstom Transport’s ‘godmother’ Virgine
Noirot, were confronted with tests mixing scientific and
cultural questions, in which they had to make the maximum
possible use of means of transport… and calculate
per-passenger CO2 emissions at each stage of the rally.

Before leaving from Paris, on Thursday 25 October, a press
conference was held at the PSA Peugeot Citroen headquarters.
Bruno Guillemet, Alstom Transport Director of Human
Resources, told those present that Alstom Transport
was a company “high on a wave of success, with many
recent contract wins and achievements such as the world rail
speed record, with significant recruitment needs and wishing to
increase the number of female candidatures.

The journey to Orly, in low-consumption cars (Citroens equipped
with the “Stop & start” system), was followed
by a flight to Lyon on an ATR-72 (reduced-consumption,
kerosene-fuelled turboprop), operated by Airlinair. A
conference on biofuels and on greater Lyon’s policy in
respect of transport was held at 6pm in the Grand Lyons
congress hall, at which
Hubert de la Grandière, director of the
Villeurbanne site, was among those present to welcome
the teams.

He pointed in particular to the contribution made by the
Villeurbanne site to sustainable development, including the
company’s travel plan, signed with Sytral, the company
responsible for transport in the Rhone and greater Lyon region,
which significantly reduced the use of cars by employees to
reach their place of work.

On Friday, participants were able to ride on
‘Velo’V’ city-funded rental bicycles in the
district of Vieux Lyons, then travelled to Marseille by TGV.
Alstom offered the train tickets to the participants and their
guides. During the journey, two Alstom Transport recruitment
managers met with the young women, to tell them about the
activities of the Group, its professions and the career
options. The young women also had to answer a quiz about rail
transport, compiled in part by Alstom.

On the Saturday, the students took a fun tour around Marseilles
to be photographed while getting around using ecological means
of transport (roller blades, bicycles…) and completed a
promenade through rocky coastal inlets by boat. In the evening,
an awards ceremony was held to honour the participants. Alstom
notably offered books about the world record, small models of
the record-setting TGV, travel bags, and MP3 players.

Created in November 2005, the association “Elles
Bougent” , with Alstom Transport as an active member, has
as its aim to cultivate a vocation for engineering jobs among
young women in the domains of aeronautics, the automotive
industry, space, railways and maritime industries. The
association currently brings together 10 companies from the
transport sector, 13 higher educational establishments, around
a hundred ‘godmothers’ and over one thousand pupils
and students.

The 3 main objectives of the association are:
- To inform and raise the awareness at an early stage of a
greater number of pupils and students

- To increase the number of students in Automotive,
Aeronautical, Space and Railway engineering training

- Over time, to facilitate the recruitment of young, female
engineers
