Alstom to supply six turbine islands to South Africas biggest coal-fired power plant

Alstom has won a contract worth more than 1.4 billion euros with South
African state-owned utility company Eskom to supply six turbine islands
part of what will be the biggest coal-fired power plant in South Africa.

The 4,800 MW power plant, will be composed of 6 x 800 MW units for which Alstom will provide the steam turbines, turbogenerators, air-cooled condensers, turbine island auxiliary equipment and associated erection services. Located at Medupi in the Limpopo province, the power plant will be the first coal-fired power plant built in the country in 20 years. 

Approximately 45% of this contract will be manufactured locally, creating thousand of jobs and boosting the local economy. Alstom, as contractor of this new project will provide training and employment to local engineers and technicians.

Alstom has been a partner of Eskom since its inception, supplying major components in many coal-fired power plants. Last year, Alstom won a contract to upgrade and retrofit Eskoms Arnot power plant with an integrated solution improving boiler and steam turbine performance.
