The power plant modernisation package includes the boiler, steam turbine, generator, instrumentation and control, together with the mechanical and electrical balance of plant*.
Alstom will work to a tight schedule of 11 months to improve the plant performance within each unit. Work on Unit 2 will run from November 2007 to September 2008, with work on Unit 3 running from March 2008 until January 2009. Up to 300 people will be employed by Alstom on site, most of whom will be hired through the company's local organisation.
Paul Moneyron, Vice President of Alstom Power Service France commented, "Alstom put together a package that meets Sonelgaz's objectives within a demanding timeframe. When faced with energy shortages, customers are looking more into plant rehabilitation as an efficient way to improve availability, and additional power. We are delighted that Sonelgaz chose Alstom to help bring its plant to the next level of competitiveness".
Marsat is a 5 x 168 MW coal-fired power plant commissioned in 1985 by another OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer). It is the most important energy source in Western Algeria.
* Balance of plant refers to supporting and/or auxiliary components of a complete power system.
