Based on ISO 9001 standards, IRIS is the only
sector-specific quality standard recognized worldwide by the
rail industry for assessing management systems. The standard
was created on the initiative of UNIFE (Association of the
European Rail Industry), with the assistance of major rail
sector players including integrators such as Alstom Transport
and equipment manufacturers.

In August 2006, Alstom Transport was the first rail
manufacturer to receive IRIS certification, which was awarded
to Ornans, a site specializing in the design and production of
train motors. As part of an ongoing improvement process, Alstom
Transport wants to demonstrate the good fit between its quality
management system and customers' demands by achieving IRIS
certification for all its integrative sites. Three other
rolling stock sites have been selected for certification by the
close of 2008: La Rochelle and Valenciennes in France, and
Katowice in Poland.
