Alstom has signed a set of contracts worth approximately 85 million euros with ThyssenKrupp CSA Siderúrgica do Atlântico Ltda. for the maintenance of their 495 MW TKCSA Rio power plant.
The combined cycle power plant is presently being built within the perimeters of the customers new steel mill and is located in the industrial area of Santa Cruz, 60 km west of downtown Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
These contracts follow the EPC (Engineering, Procurement and Construction) contract awarded to Alstom in November 2006. Alstom is delivering all core plant components: two GT11N2 LBTU gas turbines, one steam turbine generator, two heat recovery steam generators and the distributed control system for the plant and the demineralised water treatment plant. The two gas turbines will cumulatively contribute to 270 MW in the power plant and the remaining 220 MW output will be generated by the steam turbine with additional steam from the coke oven plant.
The plant is scheduled to start commercial operation in the summer 2009.
The steel mill will only consume 200 MW of the 490 MW total plant output. A further 200 MW will be supplied to the grid under a 15-year power purchase agreement and the remaining power traded on the spot market.
Well suited for use with low caloric gases, the GT11N2 LBTU gas turbine has proven high thermal efficiencies and presents a reliable, efficient and environmentally friendly industrial solution for burning waste gases from industrial plants.
Alstoms maintenance contracts are structured to provide its customers with tailored services to help them keep their plant competitive. By applying the latest technological know-how, the vast Operations and Maintenance experience and best industry practices, these contracts help customers optimise power plant efficiency and ensure maximum profitability for their business.
The signing of these contracts further consolidates Alstoms presence in Brazil. ThyssenKrupp CSA is the fifth long-term service contract signed in the country and follows contracts already in operation at Piratininga, Termobahia, Termorioand and Fortaleza.
Mr. Ricardo Pascotto, Power Plant General Manager, Thyssenkrupp CSA said, "The steel mill in Brazil is a very important and prestigious project for ThyssenKrupp. We chose Alstom equipment to convert the complex gases to produce electrical power. We have decided to use the gas turbines in a combined cycle mode to meet our objectives of efficient, reliability and safe plant operations."
