Between 29 November and 10 December 2010, energy representatives from across the world met in Cancun, Mexico, for high-level UN climate talks for the 16th annual Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Joan MacNaughton, Senior Vice President, Alstom Power & Environmental Policies and members of the global team took part in the event which Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change Chris Huhne referred to as having one of the most significant outcomes since the Kyoto Protocol itself.  Alstom can surely regard the outcome of Cancun positively, as an important step towards an effective global framework to tackle climate change.

Alstom were present in Cancun to send a signal of the importance we place on addressing climate change through strong commitments to cutting CO2 emissions. We also took the opportunity to highlight the role that Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) will have in the portfolio of low-carbon technologies to keep our lights on in the next few years. Alstom sponsored a series of discussions on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) organised by Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Bellona Foundation, had a presence at the International Emission Trading Association (IETA) business lounge, and spoke to high-level audiences at more than twenty events.

Over the next year, Alstom will continue to engage with governments directly as well as working through international organisations to contribute our clean power technology expertise in preparation for COP 17 next year in Durban, Republic of South Africa.
