Alstom has signed a contract worth approximately 20 million with GS Power Co. Ltd to upgrade two gas turbines at the Anyang gas-fired combined-cycle power plant located on the outskirts of Seoul, South Korea.

This follows a contract signed in February 2009 to upgrade the first two gas turbines. The contracts form part of a frame agreement signed in February 2009 for the upgrade of all four of the plants gas turbines and the supply of one set of spare parts, with work scheduled to begin in April 2010 and the upgrades scheduled for completion in 2011.

The scope of the project includes the upgrade of each GT11N type gas turbine to GT11NM XP (Extended Power), associated auxiliary services and spare parts, including new turbine blades and vanes, heat shield segments, vane carrier, and exhaust gas housing, leading to an increase in efficiency and in power output of more than 10% without increased emissions.

Additionally, optimised cooling and other design improvements improve turbine reliability, availability and maintainability relative to the GT11N engine, reducing the life-cycle costs of the turbines.

The GT11NM XP (Extended Power) package incorporates hardware with advanced thermal barrier coatings that permits the engine to be fired at higher temperatures, leading to additional power output.

Commenting on the order, Hans Peter Meer, Senior Vice President Thermal Services for Alstom Power, said: This contract shows once again that Alstom has the products and technological expertise to ensure our customers competitiveness. We have extensive upgrade experience across our entire gas turbine fleet, with the GT11NM upgrade being an excellent example. The solution has a very solid track record, and with the XP hardware package the Anyang engines will be brought to the next level of performance.

The Alstom-built Anyang combined-cycle power plant has been in commercial operation since 1992. With four GT11N gas turbines and one steam turbine, the plant currently has an overall capacity of 478 MW. A portion of the generated process steam is also used for district heating.

To date, Alstom has sold or installed nearly 90 GT11Nx units in Canada, Korea, Peru, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Taiwan and the US. Alstoms M-upgrade packages allow its customers to increase revenues and save fuel costs by increased power output and efficiency, or to extend inspection intervals, thus reducing maintenance costs.
