Alstom has won three contracts to supply emergency diesel generators (EDGs)* to Chinese nuclear power plants Fangchenggang, Ningde and Hainan Changjiang, securing its position as the countrys largest supplier of emergency diesel generators.
Alstom has occupied an historic position in the development of Chinas nuclear power industry ever since its involvement in the construction of Daya Bay, Chinas first major nuclear power plant, twenty years ago, and more recently via its involvement in Taishan, Chinas first nuclear power plant to use the third-generation EPR reactor.
In this most recent contract, worth approximately 30 million and signed on 5th February 2010 with CNPE (China Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation), the EPC Engineering, Procurement and Construction contracting arm of the CNNC (China National Nuclear Corporation), Alstom and Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry Co Ltd will supply five EDGs with a total power output of 5800 KW to the Changjiang nuclear power plant in Hainan, southern China. The units will be commissioned in late 2013. Alstom has a long-standing relationship with the CNNC and has already supplied EDGs and auxiliary equipment to Qinshan 2, Qinshan 3, Tianwan I and Tianwan 2 nuclear power plants.
Two further contracts, signed with Chinese manufacturer Shaanxi Diesel Heavy Industry Co Ltd on 8th December 2009 and worth a total of approximately 30 million, involve the supply of five EDGs to Fangchenggang nuclear power plant in the southern province of Guangxi, and four to Ningde nuclear power plant in Fujian, southeast China. The nine units have a total power output of 6300 KW and are due for commissioning in 2013.
Equipment relating to Alstoms scope in all the three projects will be largely supplied by Alstom Wuhan Engineering and Technology Company Ltd. in China.
These latest contracts further confirm Alstoms position as a supplier of essential equipment to Chinese nuclear power plants, says Guy Chardon, Senior Vice President, Alstom Power Thermal Products.
Similar contracts won by Alstom in China include the supply of eight new EDGs to the Taishan nuclear power plant in Guangdong, to which Alstom is also supplying the complete turbine island, including two 1,750 MW Arabelle turbine-generator packages.
Editors Notes
*Every nuclear power plant has emergency power supplies in the form of diesel-driven electric generators. In the event of a loss of power, these generators supply power to special safety electrical distribution panels, which in turn supply power to those emergency pumps, valves, fans, etc. that may be required to operate in these circumstances.
