From August 10-12, a group of Alstoms technical and commercial leaders in fossil fuel technologies traveled to Pittsburgh, US to participate in Coal Gen 2010, an industry conference focused on the environmental, operational and technical innovations for coal based power generation.

The Alstom conference delegates presented technical papers, chaired conference sessions, and discussed/debated key issues on panels. Their participation provided the opportunity to convey key messages in a range of areas of importance to the audience.

CO2 capture technology, a critical element of a sustainable future for fossil fuel power generation, was addressed by Tom Stringer during the CCS Update Megasession and in the technical paper sessions with presentations on the AEP Mountaineer Chilled Ammonia demonstration, Impact of Plant Operational modes on Amine CO2 capture, and OxyCombustion.

As a part of the panel discussion on The Economic and Emission Case for CFBs a presentation titled Addressing CO2 with CFBs was presented.

Advancements in Boiler designs were another important topic covered by Alstom. Presentations were made on Innovations in Supercritical Designs and Alstoms large CFB technology. We chaired a technical session on CFB.  Together, these presentations provided a well balanced view of our boiler offerings for diverse fuels and high efficiency combustion.

Last, but not least, we gave the audience our expertise on the factors impacting fouling and plugging of the Ljungström® air preheater (APH) at low gas exit temperatures. Higher APH efficiencies directly improve boiler efficiency and reduce carbon emissions.

Alstom's advanced heat transfer surfaces are inherently less prone to fouling and more cleanable than alternatives available in the marketplace. The current ongoing research is focused at achieving a 2-3% increment in boiler efficiency through further advances in heating element technology and operating practices.

A team of Alstom co-authors supported bringing these messages to the conference. The full list of papers and presentation is given below:
