The ECS (Environmental Control System) division of Alstom Power Italy was one of the characters of the international conference "Sustainable development in thermal power plants and mines", organized in September in Serbia by the Chamber of Commerce of Palic.
The meeting offered a framework of the environmental projects realized in Serbia and future opportunities. This country in the Balkan region represents the area with the best prospects in environmental investments related to the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), one of the flexible mechanisms under the Kyoto Protocol, which allows companies in industrialized countries, with constraints issue, implement projects to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in developing countries without emission constraints. The conference represented an interesting opportunity for discussion on the topic related to the wet desulphurization of flue gases produced by power plants.
"The debate on this subject is very topical in Serbia, given also the recent investment in the energy sector related to performance of power plants Kolubara B, Kostolac and Tent". said Jari Heininen, ECS Sales Manager for Eastern Europe Alstom Power Italy, speaker at the symposium. "These three plants will be equipped with systems for wet desulfurization of flue gases through the realization of an absorber, in which the gas will be purified by washing with aqueous suspension of limestone and gypsum. This particular process - continued Heinen - uses limestone as a reagent to reduce sulphur oxides and the result of the final chemical reaction is the production of gypsum that can be sold to the cement and construction industries".
Alberto Gambarè, Technology Manager for ECS wet desulphurization plants, Alstom Power Italy, added "As part of the conference, as outpoint reference, we presented the Megalopolis project, realized in Greece by ECS team of Alstom Power Italy. In operation since 2009, the plant that uses lignite with high sulphur content, stands on high levels of performance with an efficiency rate of 99%".
