Alstom Grid has been selected by Light Energia and Light SESA, companies responsible for the power control and distribution in Rio de Janeiro State (Brazil), to supply its e-terraplatform solution to improve monitoring and operating the electric system. The system at Light Energia was put into commercial operation in July, and the other, at Light SESA, will be commissioned by the end of the year.

Light Energia and Light SESA are putting in place a complete automation program to meet the distribution management needs of the Rio de Janeiro state network. At the start of the program, there will be up to 400,000 equipment control and network connection points, and this will expand to over 800,000 as the program is deployed.  e-terraplatform allows the operators to monitor the entire grid network, including the automated underground systems. It is the number one Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition/Energy Management System (SCADA/EMS) solution in the world, providing improved reliability monitoring and real-time control over the network.

Brazil is facing significant challenges in energy sector, with the need to modernize existing substations, integrate renewable energy sources and deploy new intelligent distribution management systems. e-terraplatform is designed to meet the needs of increasingly complex electrical power grids, providing a reliable, highly available and flexible solution for energy management., explained Sergio Gomes, Alstom Grids Latin America Region Vice President.

Alstom Grid has important references for the transmission control centers, such as the regional centers at Brasília, and in distribution, in the centers of AES Eletropaulo, in São Paulo. Alstoms e-terraplatform runs the systems of nearly half of the largest Power Grid Operators and 170 systems in the USA. Its energy management solutions manage 70% of electrical power in Middle East Utilities and 80% in Africa.
