Alstom Partners on Launch of Innovative Energy Storage Project

Earlier this week Alstom, in collaboration with faculty at the University of Washington (UW), announced a new partnership with Snohomish Public Utility District (PUD) and 1Energy Systems for the Modular Energy Storage Architecture (MESA) R&D project.

When completed, the state-of the-art storage system will help electric utilities increase their use of renewable energy, reducing energy costs and improving reliability. Alstom is working with UW on research, analysis and technology interfaces for the one-megawatt battery (MESA) based energy storage unit system provided by 1Energy, the lead partner responsible for software development, systems engineering and other key components. The system will be installed at Snohomish PUD to help partners to observe the benefits of a MESA based system to effectively grow their use of wind, solar, and other clean renewable energy resources.

Steve Klein, General Manager of Snohomish PUD, had the following to say about the project and the contribution made by Alstom and UW,Were also excited to include Alstom Grid and the University of Washington as key project contributors, building on other successful collaborations between Snohomish PUD and these world-class organizations, Klein added. We believe the MESA R&D Project will ultimately help address the energy storage needs of tomorrow and benefit the entire electric utility industry.
