A regular meeting of the Board of Directors of ALSTOM-Atomenergomash (AAEM) was held on December 20 in Moscow, in particular to decide on the selection of the Russia manufacturing site which will produce equipment and components for the Turbine Island in Russia, based on the Arabelle world leading technology for nuclear steam turbine.

After a thorough screening of options, the Board of Directors decided to retain the Volgodonsk site (Rostov oblast), a branch of AEM-tekhnologii CJSC (Atomenergomash), based on its exceptional infrastructural capabilities.

The choice of this site was made on the basis of very good transportation infrastructure and strong experience in manufacturing large components for the nuclear industry. It has highly skilled manpower and is already equipped with substantial production means which will significantly streamline the ramp-up of the localization of the Arabelle-based Turbine Island in Russia.

"The decision made on this existing site, with exceptional capabilities and qualified teams, will ensure a proper fulfilment of our contract for the delivery of turbine island equipment for power units 1 and 2 of the Baltic NPP and is a major milestone for reinforcing AAEM positioning as leading supplier for nuclear power plants", said Alexander Tsvetkov, CEO of ALSTOM-Atomenergomash JV, based on results of the meeting.

Historically, Atommash, the atomic machinery plant on which the Volgodonsk branch of AEM-tekhnologii is based now, was a key manufacturer of heavy machinery in the USSR and produced a wide range of high-technology equipment for the nuclear industry. The site is capable of producing VVER nuclear reactors, steam turbines systems, protection and operation control systems, moisture-separator reheaters, steam generators and other equipment. The location of the plant allows to ship the equipment by all transport means including water, from its own pier.

In 2012, for the first time in the 26th years, the Volgodonsk branch started the complete production of the nuclear reactor for the Baltic nuclear power plant.
