Alstom Grid has been awarded a contract worth around 12 million with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company (EETC) to manufacture and deliver a Gas-Insulated Substation (GIS) to their new Gabal El-Zayt wind farm. Located on the Gulf of Suez, and covering 625 km2, Gabel El-Zayt will be the largest onshore wind farm in Egypt with a planned capacity of 3 GW by 2020. This project is financed by the German Bank for Reconstruction (KfW).
This new GIS substation will be the first substation to transmit the produced power from the wind farm to the electricity network. To suit the specific needs of the wind park, Alstom Grid is offering a solution to increase the availability of the substation and therefore the reliability of the electricity supply.
Gabal El-Zayt represents an important milestone in assuring Egypts renewal energy future. EETCs goal is to produce 20% of its total energy from renewable sources by 2020. Hydropower will contribute 8% and wind and other resources 12% to this growing portfolio. The wind farm will also help Egypt to reach its ambition of a 7% annual capacity increase in overall energy production. A network is underway to connect Egypt to neighbouring countries such as Libya and Jordan, with plans for a future link with Saudi Arabia.
Delivering our GIS technology to the Gabel El-Zayt wind farm and renewing our collaboration with EETC further establishes Alstom Grids commitment to support Egypts renewal goal and the growing regional electricity needs, declared Jean-Pierre Faure, Regional Vice-President Western Europe and Africa for Alstom Grid.
The substation is due to be commissioned at the end of 2013. The scope of this turnkey project includes civil works, as well as eleven 220 kV GIS Bays, 43 Medium Voltage (MV) GIS Switchgear, two 125 MVA power transformers, Automation and Telecommunication systems. All Alstom products are manufactured in France and Turkey.
