UK business helps Alstom to third consecutive appearance in Dow Jones Sustainability Index

For the third year in a row, Alstom has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI), which recognises companies corporate and social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.

And the UK business has helped Alstom achieve that accolade, putting in place a number of CSR policies and initiatives to make sure that it remains a good corporate citizen in the areas in which it operates.

A number of those initiatives are based in key areas in the UK, particularly in the Midlands, where the company has almost 3,000 employees, and in Manchester where it has major rail and power construction sites. Activities there include:

Volunteering for a range of conservation tasks at a nature reserve near the Grid and Power sites in Stafford;

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) ambassadors volunteering at local schools;

Major donations of time and money to help renovate and support community schemes near the Carrington gas-fired power station construction site; and 

Sponsorship of a major project to bring science and engineering to the community by working with local schools.

In the UK, Alstom concentrates its CSR activities into a number of areas, including Engineering Education, Environmental Sustainability, Community Engagement and Sustainable Supply Chain.
Alstom is committed to the development of engineering skills in the UK, and has strong partnerships with schools, colleges and universities, supporting science and technology courses in areas where it operates.

The company also has five world-class technical training facilities in the UK, specialising in welding, lifting and rigging, steam turbines, generators, and electrical transmission technologies. Alstom is also a founding member of the Nationals Skills Academy for Power, and has a representative on the board of the National Skills Academy for Rail.

All UK supply organisations that work with Alstom are required to sign up to the companys sustainable sourcing charter. Companies are audited during their re-tendering processes to ensure that they meet these criteria. 

Our UK business is committed to being actively involved in meeting and exceeding targets set by the UK Government and employs a dedicated project manager for Energy and Greenhouse Gases Reduction, working to engage employees and develop action plans to reduce the company's carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions. 

We have worked hard to reduce emissions (from 62k tonnes in 2011 to 55k tonnes in 2012). Alstom has set the target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2015 (compared to 2008) and the steps we have taken show we are well on our way to achieving our target.
Recent examples of our CSR activities include:

While building the Pembroke gas-fired power station, we raised more than £40,000 for the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Wales Air Ambulance; and

As we work to build the Nottingham tram extension, we have committed to replace each tree removed during civil works with two trees elsewhere, and 10% of our workforce is being recruited through local college training schemes, targeting young people, the long-term unemployed, and former members of the armed forces

Launched in 1989, the DJSI evaluates the performance of 3,000 companies worldwide. More than 300 are selected in the index based on economic, social and environmental criteria.
