On Tuesday, 28 May, Alstom gave a tour of the M2 metro system in Lausanne as part of the 60th UITP World Congress in Geneva. The visit to Lausanne was a highlight of Alstoms participation in UITP 2013, along with the previous days launch of Urbalis Fluence (the first train-centric CBTC solution) and Axonis (a new light metro system).
Dozens of visitors had the privilege of seeing what goes on behind the scenes at this showcase of Alstoms overall expertise. For the M2 system, the company supplied:
- 15 automated tyre-equipped metro trains,
- a CBTC traffic control system (Urbalis),
- a video surveillance and passenger information system,
- 13.4 km of track,
- electrification for the track and substations.
Visitors got on the metro at Ouchy station and travelled to line M2s maintenance centre and depot where the trainsets are stored and maintained. Alstom has been granted a five-year maintenance contract.
The tour continued with a visit to the PCC (central command station), the nerve centre of the entire operation. The PCC manages signalling, passenger information, and video surveillance, and has been a decisive factor in line M2s ability to transport more than 100 million passengers efficiently since it began operating in 2008.
Line M2 of the Lausanne metro is 6 km long with 15 trains serving 14 stations. It connects the banks of Lake Geneva to the heights of the city in 18 minutes, with a differential of 338 metres between the terminals. Certain slopes along the route have a 12% gradient, which is a world record for a metro.
