Alstom supports development in Tanzania with the inauguration of the Millennium Challenge project
September 10th, Alstom joined the Millennium Challenge Tanzania (MCA-T) inauguration ceremony, hosted by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete and by the Resident Country Director of the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) in Tanzania, Mr Karl Fickenscher. The event took place in a village in the northern region of Mwanza which is now electrified thanks to the MCA-T project.
MCA-T was funded by the US government to support the development of energy infrastructure, including expansion of the high and medium voltage grid to bring energy services to Tanzania. The scope of this project included both substation and transmission lines. For its part, Alstom Grid delivered the high voltage substation in partnership with US Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) company, Symbion Power.
In 2010, the Alstom Grid-Symbion Joint Venture won a contract to rehabilitate and expand transmission and distribution substations across six regions in Tanzania as part of the MCC Compact in Tanzania. In April of this year, Alstom Grid and Symbion also joined the inauguration of the Mtoni substation in Zanzibar, which along with a submarine cable will bring energy from Tanzania to the island.
The combined transmission and distribution investment from the MCA-T project will have a major impact on both households and businesses in Tanzania by providing a more reliable and higher quality source of electricity.
