Alstom T&D India has been awarded a 7 million (INR 560 million) contract by Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to monitor and control Sri Lankas electricity transmission network. Alstom will supply its world-leading energy management system, e-terraplatform, to enable reliable, secure and efficient operation of Sri Lankas hydro-thermal electricity system.

Under the project, Alstom will build in Colombo a new control centre the National System Control Centre, equipped with supervisory control, data acquisition, and energy management system. It will install and integrate 34 Remote Terminal Units (RTU) with the new system and integrate existing substation automation. Equipment will be manufactured from Alstoms Noida manufacturing facilities in India.

RTUs are intelligent devices that collect data from remote locations to enhance network visibility for grid operators. Alstoms e-terraplatform software solution analyses the collected data to help grid operators monitor and operate the network on a real-time basis, and make decisions in real-time to ensure security of the national grid.

Rathin Basu, Managing Director of Alstom T&D India, said, Alstom has provided similar systems for India, Bangladesh and Bhutan, making a solid contribution towards the transmission network development in the South Asian region. This prestigious project will witness the introduction of smart technologies in the Sri Lankan transmission grid.

Sri Lanka has an installed capacity of 2214 MW with a peak demand of 2014 MW. This project will help CEB improve grid stability, including support for integration of renewable energy, such as wind and solar, into the national grid. This is Sri Lankas first energy management system project for grid monitoring, stability and control.
