Alstom has been awarded a 40 million turnkey contract by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to reconstruct the 275 kV Tudan substation in Sarawak, one of two Malaysian states on the island of Borneo, otherwise known as East Malaysia. The project, to be completed in phases over 41 months, will strengthen the Sarawak Grid for reliable electricity supply to the Miri population, the second largest city in Sarawak, as well as industries in and around the Northern Region in Sarawak.

Alstom will supply the necessary civil works, as well as products and commissioning, for the upgrade, including a new 275 kV switchyard and two new 240 MVA auto transformers. Alstom will also relocate existing systems and auxiliaries from present site to the new substation.

SEB is the state owned utility serving over 500,000 account holders on East Malaysia and a generating capacity of over 350 GW. This project is part of SEBs efforts to support Sarawaks development strategy and new power plants, completed or forthcoming, to strengthen the electricity grid to ensure efficient transmission and to help manage load distribution. The Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy, for instance, is one of Malaysias five economic corridors that aims to improve infrastructure, manage urbanisation and develop renewable power generation to encourage industrial investments accelerating Sarawaks economic growth and development.

We are pleased to be entrusted another opportunity to support SEB with the 275 kV Tudan substation reconstruction. Alstom Grid has successful references of previous SEB projects, and looks forward to leveraging our substation turnkey expertise and local experience in this type of construction for the said project too, said Michel Serra, Senior Vice President, China - East Asia Pacific, Alstom Grid.

This is Alstoms second project with SEB and fourth substation project executed in Sarawak. Alstom has been in Malaysia for over 45 years with a strong track record as the largest original equipment manufacturer in Malaysia with 7.5 GW of installed power generation capacity. Alstom is currently constructing two supercritical coal fired power plants, Manjung and Tanjung Bin.
